On Saturday, May 20, 2021, Armed Forces Day in the United States, the Rotary Club of Hinsdale, in partnership with the USO of Illinois and the Community House of Hinsdale, provided 80 new bikes & helmets to the children of active military families based in Illinois.
The distribution of the bikes took place at the Hinsdale Community House, 415 W. 8th St, Hinsdale, from 8AM to 11AM that day. This is the fifth year that the Rotary Club of Hinsdale and the Community House of Hinsdale have participated in the USO of Illinois “Bikes for Military Kids” program.
In Illinois, there are approximately 25,000 active military members living in the state. Over half of these “actives” are married, and raising families in Illinois.
Since 2018, the Rotary Club of Hinsdale program has provided about 500 new bicycles to military families living here in Illinois. Most military kids who have received bikes over the years, have never owned bikes before. This is due to the transient nature of active military service, which makes it difficult for kids to move bikes from base to base.
Beginning in mid April 2023, USO of Illinois used its website to announce to active military families the availability of the Hinsdale Rotary bikes & helmets for military kids. The USO, using standard military procedure, decided by lottery which kids were to be presented with bikes & helmets. The 80 winners of that USO lottery picked up a new bike & helmet in Hinsdale on May 20th.
